NATIONAL COSTUME

National costume is given by Alberto Fortis, (1745-1803) (Italian travel writer) in his work "Travelling round Dalmatia". Costume shows the girl from Neretva which is the oldest picture on the costume. The girl is wearing the Dinaric type of clothes and long peasant coat onduced Fortis.

Male costume also belongs to the Dinaric type. Typical trousers are made of blue broadcloth, called pincers trousers with broad back area and longer legs that are taken in towards the ankles. In summer they wear another trousers made of blue linen and the same cut.

NERETVA RIVER

Neretva river is the most imortant river in the Adriatic area. The delta of the river Neretva is actually area along the lower flow of Neretva, from Gabela (BiH) to Dubrovnik district. In delta area, 430 square kilometres, today live 35 000 inhabitants, 15 000 live in Metkovic, 7 000 in Ploce and 3 000 in Opuzen. There are many apartments, rooms and a few smaller hotels in delta of Neretva river. First traces of life in river Neretva area starts thousand years ago. Many archeological remains are only partly explored to public, because the Neretva deposited a layer of mud above archeological remains. Some sculptures are in Archaeological museum, in Split.

When Naron fall as an urban town migration has started. It`s name has been lost from the stage of history even population continues to live nearby. New-settled Croatians mixed with other Roman population and they found towns in delta of Neretva and on Adriatic Islands, Hvar, Brac, Mljet, Korcula... Porfirogenet (Byzantine emperor) brought first news about new-settled Croats in his work "About governing a state", he named that area Pagania. In that time, many fortress and fortifications were built on the coast to protect merchant routes. Salt was most important merchandise. Croats exported the salt to Bosnian Kingdom. In Drijeva, citizens of Dubrovnik was selling slaves to Bosnian Kingdom, until it was forbidden in 1444 by Senat.

NATURAL SIGHTS

The delta of Neretva is full of natural sights. Natural sight has been changed by influence of time and peoples. There are: Modric river, Lake Glogovacko, Vlaska, Timenica, Draguc... Today, this area is full of plantations of southern fruits, because average annual temperature is 16 degrees, mild winters & warm and dry summers. Culinary specialities are: fish, frogs & birds.
