Vis (Croatia, Central Dalmatia, Island Vis) is a town and port in the east part of the north shore of the island of Vis. Chief occupations are farming, fishing, wine production and tourism. The town of Vis is located on the regional road it is also a ferry port, with ferry connections to Split.

Music and other cultural events are organized during the season. Great quality accommodation in apartments and hotels, unpolluted environment with the blue and clear sea and marine scenery as well as the domestic specialities - seafood from the cleanest part of the Adriatic, different sports and recreation possibilities, they all enrich the offer of Vis, an island which emerged from a long period of isolation (tourists have been allowed to visit the island since 1989).

HISTORY

We recommend you visit the Museum of Vis located in the Austrian fortress “Gospina batarija”. Except the museum, you can also visit the archeological excavations that are still being researched. The archeological excavation Martvilo is located behind the sports centre and represents the only old Greek cemetery in Croatia. After this, if you deicide to walk along the coast, in approximately 5 minutes you can se another archeological excavation of the Roman thermae (public baths) from the 1.-2. century A.D.

If you continue on walking, you will reach the monastery and the church of the Franciscans Conventuals, whose monastery from the 15th century was built on the ruins of the ancient theatre. The remains of that theatre can be seen in the garden of the monastery, while the walls contain the remains of the stone monuments of the ancient Issa. By the sea coast surrounding Prirovo, the remains of the port buildings and the harbor of the ancient city that is currently under the water can be seen.
