Lokrum (Croatia, South Dalmatia, Island Lokrum) is a very green islet, near Dubrovnik. It`s romantic beauty, oasis of peace, sunny open sea, clean sea, bathing sites and bays, fragrant sea, woods of pine, laurel and lush subtropical vegetation, attractive sights and beautiful beaches guarantee pleasant stay. On island are old Benedictine monastery, from 12th century. It was closed during time of Napoleon occupation.

After Napoleon, monastery and islet came into possession of Habsburg Archduke Maximilian. Maximilian renovated monastery in the neo-Gothic style. In 1859, monastery was his summer residence. Later he built a castle. Castle had the shape of a tower. In this castle today is home of Biological Institute of Croatian Academy of Arts and Science and Natural Science Museum. Museum owns valuable collections and memorial collection of world renowned Dubrovnik mathematician, atomis and astronomer, Ruder Boskovic, from 18th century.

After Maximilian`s tragic death in Mexico, Lokrum had changed owner for several times. Today Lokrum is protected nature park. When French occupation occured, they built a citadel "Fort Royale" on the highest peak on the island. From that peak you can see lovely view of Lokrum and Dubrovnik. Special place on island of Lokrum is a small lake, in the middle. It is called "Death Sea". Transport to Lokrum is daily organized from old town part of Dubrovnik by tourist boats.
