Dubrovnik (Croatia, South Dalmatia) is the city of special cultural history, one of the most attractive and famous in the world. Dubrovnik is protected by UNESCO. Dubrovnik Republic is founded in 1272. Dubrovnik offers high quality tourist opportunities. It has many hotels, rooms, apartments. Dubrovnik started to develop turism before First World War and now is powerful international tourist centre. Many cruisers choose Dubrovnik for their destination.

Sightseeing of Dubrovnik requires few days. During your visit you can see many monuments, take a walk through Stradun, and it`s narrow streets and aquares, fortresses, libraries, oldest pharmacy in the south Europe... Duke`s Palace keeps over 15 000 exhibits in cultural department. Maritime Museum in fortress of Saint Ivan has a number of exhibits on a display related to Dubrovnik and Croatian history. Franciscian monastery keeps inventory of the old pharmacy. Dominican monastery exhibits painting, sculptures, manuscripts and music notes from the 15th and 16th century.

There are many monasteries, hotels and churches all over the Dubrovnik. Walk along town ramparts is a must for every visitor. Most important event in Dubrovnik is "Dubrovnik Summer Festival", from 10th of July until 25th of August. Dubrovnik Summer Festival is held since 1950, traditionally. Most important part of Festival are local "lindo" and "lado" folk music ensembles.

Dubrovnik has a little port in centre of old town. Port is protected by Porporela breakwater. Port can dock yachts drawing up to 3 metres and smaller ships, but they are usually docked in the cove of Gornja Bocina. Also, Dubrovnik has a trading port, port of Gruz. Port of Gruz is located 2.5 km northwest from the old centre of Dubrovnik. Marina Dubrovnik is situated in Komolac, 4 km frome centre, in the interior part of Rijeka Dubrovacka.

HISTORY

Name of the town comes from word "Dubrava". First traces of Dubrovnik comes from 7th century, after the fall of Epidaurum, Cavtat today. Earthquake in year 1667. put Dubrovnik in very difficult situation. Economy was very bad. French army entered Dubrovnik in 1806. and in 1808. In year 1815, due to Vienna Congress, Dubrovnik was annexed to Austria.

State adminitration, during the period of independence, was in hands of aristocracy. Administrative bodies were; Upper Council, Lower Council and Senate. Head of the state was the Duke. Duke was elected for a term of one month. In 14th century Dubrovnik gained Ston, Peljesac Peninsula and island of Mljet. Island of Lastovo, Dubrovnik gained in 13th century.

HERITAGE

Dubrovnik have town ramparts, fortifications, towers... Because all of that, Dubrovnik is the city of high cultural and historical value and outstanding artistic importance. Some of the constructors involved in building Dubrovnik are: Juraj Dalmatinac, Nicifor Ranjina, Bartholomeo, Milicevic Paskoje, Ferramolino, Hranjac... Main wall is 1 940 metres long, 5 metres wide and up to 25 metres high. Town was also defended by two fortresses, they were independent, Ravelin and Lovrijenac. They were 45 metres high. Their construction started in 1050. Dubrovnik has four gates, two on port and two on mainland.
