Cres (Croatia, Kvarner, Island Cres) is located on the north part of a large and shielded bay on island of Cres. Around Cres are spacious and attractive bathing areas. First inhabitants came here in the Antique period and the left us whole range of monuments. Life on this island was very difficult and these monuments are proving that.

In the centre of Cres is a small medieval harbour that is called "Mandrac". You have to visit Renessaince and Gothic monasteries and churches, palaces of noble families and remains of town walls. Cres was remained confined within the town walls until the period of Venetian domination. In that time, only two building was outside the walls, two monasteries. In the 19th century development of seafaring and shipbuilding improved economy in Cres and nearby villages. Cres started to spreading to the south and west side. Tourists industry started to expand especially in 60`s and 70`s years of the previous century.

The most important historical and cultural and monuments in Cres are three town gates (Bragadina, Saint Mikulo and Marcela), corner tower in the northwest part of the town, church of Saint Isidor from the 12th century, a Franciscan monastery from 12th century, church of Saint Francis from 14th century and many other...

Town Cres is situated on north-west side of island Cres. It is main center on island Cres. It is situated in a bay with many beautiful swimm areas.

ABOUT ISLAND CRES

Island Cres is the largest Adriatic island (same as island Krk) located on north side of Kvarner bay. It is connected with land with ferries and with island Losinj with drawbridge.

Island Cres is 66 km long and 2-12 km wide. Coast is 248 km long with many bays, pebble beaches and rocks. Natural beauty on island Cres is freshwater lake Vrana. Its size is 5,75 km2, its bottom is below sea level, on depth of 74 m. Island Cres is filled with forests, pastures and macchia. Island Cres is one of the last habitats of very rare bird griffon vulture.

Island Cres has great cultural and historical heritage, churches, remains of towns, monuments... Inhabitants of island Cres are directed to tourism, agriculture, apiculture, olive growing, livestock farming, fruit growing...

Until the venetian time Cres was developed only inside of city walls. Outside of the walls were only two monasteries. It starts to developing sea business and ship building in the middle of 19th century.
