BLATO TOURIST INFORMATION - CROATIA TOURIST INFORMATION

Blato (Croatia, South Dalmatia, Island Korcula) is situated 42 km away from town Korcula in an amphitheater on 7 hills. Blato is in a whole, around is paved square. Here is parish church of "Svi Sveti" (All Saints) from 16th century. Church have a tower and loggia.

From the tower you can see white-roofed houses on the surrounding hills. This church is example of the local stone-masons who made it by mixing Romanesque, Renaissance and Gothic elements. In church there are three important works of art, the gift of the poet Kanavelid, choir benches in the late Renaissance style, a restored painting by Girolamo di Santacroce, at the main altar and a Baroque carved frame for the side altar and rich collection of candelabras, crosses and other silver church objects.

Also, there are Church of Saint Kuzma and Saint Damjan in Zablace, near Blato. This churches are built in pre-Romanesque style in 11th century. They give proof that Croats lived here long time ago. Lot of other churches are near Blato, Church of Saint Maria in Velo Polje, Saint Mihovil on the hill near the field of Blato and Saint Martin in Mala Krtinica. They are built in 14th century.

Churches that are built later are: Saint Vid on the top of the Veli Ucjak, Our lady of Health in Mali Ucjak and Saint Ivan in Vela Strana. Many small churches and chapels are also built in surrounding of Blato.

South and North part of Blato is divided by the filed of Zlinje. Zlinje is most beautiful elm tree alley in Croatia. In the middle of Blato is a small Hotel Lipa. Blato have rich culture of producing wine. There is wine cellar called "Blato" that produces wine from Blato fields and from other regions of the island. Also, there is a production of steel hatches, firm "Radez" has a world-wide reputation. Firm "Trikop" produces a textile and export it to the USA. Because all that, Blato is industrial centre.

Local artist are: Natasa Cetinic, Ante Sardelic and Franulovic Frano. They are contemorary painters. Frano Franulovic has an atelier in Blato. In Blato, there is several natural bays, Prizba, Prigradica and Grscica. Prizba and Grscica are 8 kilometres away from Blato.

In the middle of centuries old pine trees is modern Hotel Alfir. Here is ideal place for a quiet stay in nature where only noise comes form sea-gulls and crickets. Priscapac, modern apartment settlement was built on the sea cost. It is above sunny beaches and a small romantic peninsula. This represents a true small hamlet with tourists advantages.
